I was informed in no uncertain terms by my son after his music theory class that those composers you named are not 'classical' but are the 'romantic's and beyond! nonetheless, I told him you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

classic composers are like providers...I like 'em all!

favorite compositions, however:
Pachelbel's Canon and Gigue in D (hardly anyone plays the gigue which is artistically challenging!)....Joy how are your fingers?
Brahms' Academic Overture
Beethoven's Egmont Overture

and to depart from the purist's classics:
Ravel's Bolero
Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man

Well, how about.....as far as technically difficult to play: Liszt, Chopin, or Brahms. Some of the most beautiful melodies: Debussy, Carl Maria von Weber, or Franz Schubert.

Good for your son. Baroque is not Classical, nor is Classical Romantic. Sounds like he's getting a good education!

Philogynous_P, very interesting! I have a particular fondness for Ravel's Bolero, but hadn't seen either of those videos. Imagine that...a conductor(Zappa) smoking a cigarette, lol.

Here is another rendition of Bolero by Pink Martini that I especially enjoy

This live recording isn't as good, but I thought the guy playing the drums looked a lot like our very own DaGypsy. Hey, a girl can dream right?
